Today's Orthodontic Treatment Options

Orthodontics is a field that is dedicated to modifying the alignment and shape of the teeth. Orthodontists also work to correct problems that a person may have with the bone structure of the jaw. People who have teeth that are not aligned properly have problems biting and chewing their food properly. They may also have speech problems. Ignoring problems that require treatment from an orthodontist can caue problems with mastication. That can cause teeth to wear in an unusual manner and it can also put stress on the teeth's surrounding tissues. Dentists are cognizant of the fact that orthodontic care is needed for good health, self-image and appearance.

Today's Orthodontics

Several years ago, going to the orthodontist meant that one would have to wear a mouth full of wires that were painful, inconvenient and unattractive. Those type of braces had to be worn for a long time and has to frequently be adjusted by an orthodontist. There have been many advances made that have shortened the time that a person had to wear braces. One of the most recent developments is the Invisalign. Invisalign is transparent braces that are computer-designed. Many people prefer invisalign because it improves their appearance, but that is not the only advantage that it offers. Clear braces can be removed while the person brushes or flosses, which makes them much more convenient than traditional braces.

Orthodontic Treatment Options

There are several treatment options that Orthodontists use to straighten a patient's teeth. One of the most familiar ways is braces. Many patients still get the wire braces, even though invisalign has grown rapidly in popularity. After the braces are removed, patients are required to wear a retainer so that their teeth will not return to their former positions. Many patients have extreme misalignments of their jaws and have to have surgery to correct it.

Orthodontics and Your Child

Most children have their permanent teeth by the time they are six or seven. That is the time that a child needs to get examined by a specialist. It is much easier for dentists to correct malformations of the jaw during that time because the bones have not finished growing yet.  All children need to have their first examination before they finish primary school that a treatment plan can be designed. If a treatment plan is developed early on, it will be much easier to correct problems later down the road.

What is the Bottom Line?

The bottom line is that orthodontics may be necessary even if it is unpleasant. A good orthodontic clinic can do work wonders for a child's teeth which can positively affect his or her appearance and lifestyle for the rest of their lives. The money invested in orthodontics will be well worth it.
